Isaiah 26:9 (NASB)
At night my soul longs for You,
Indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently;
For when the earth experiences Your judgments
The inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.

Dear Neighbor,

It is hard to believe that 1/4 of this year is complete. This week, at Sylvania Church, we will honor the Lord, as is our tradition, with a Maundy Thursday service. It is a salaam service in which different persons in the congregation read the final words of Christ on this night up to his death and burial the following day, which has been called “Good Friday.” We also eat the Lord’s supper together which was inaugurated on this night. This salaam service, the words of our Lord read, and remembering his sacrifice; eating the bread and drinking the wine should cause the spirit within to seek the Lord. The Lord died for our sins and he was buried. In my opinion, this is probably the most important service in the entire year because it should cause each of us to reflect on what the Lord has done for us. He died on a cross, in our place for our sins, and he was buried; even Pilot said that he could find no fault in him. God made Jesus Christ who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ. (2 Cor 5:21) I have been wondering about for the past two years unsure of myself and my purpose in life. I just realized not many days ago the reason for my confusion. The things that led to my confusion still exist but I have been given clarity and a purpose. Lord willing, I will continue the course that the Lord our God has set before me.

Dear Neighbor,

Have you prayed today for God’s name, for God’s kingdom, for God’s will, for your needs, for your debts, for your debtors and for your deliverance? These seven, Jesus taught his disciples to pray. (Mt 6:9-13) What is the name of God? The name of God is the nature of God, it is a representative of God. For this reason, Jesus could pray to the Father God, “Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are.” (Jn 17:11, NASB) He is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of God’s nature, (Heb 1:3) who became flesh and dwelt amongst us; (Jn 1:14) therefore, the name of God is Jesus. We pray for God’s name, for his kingdom, for his will, for our needs, for our debts, for our debtors and for our deliverance because this is complete prayer. Jesus taught his disciples to pray for these seven things because they are the totality of all that is and should be in our hearts and mind.

Dear Neighbor,

Yesterday was unlike any day for the past one year but was like many days before. I began the day (as is my habit) in the word of God, then I went for a six mile run on the streets outside of our neighborhood. Darlene and I went to Sunday School and we saw many people that we know and there were a few in the class that we had never meet before. After the class, we went to corporate worship in the sanctuary, there were a great number of people in attendance. All of this was like many days before but unlike any day for the past year. The morning was very familiar and different than the past one year. It is an interesting feeling to have what is familiar and yet be far removed at the same time. We spent the afternoon at home relaxing and I spent time reading a book. After this, we went to my mother’s home to celebrate our nephew’s twentieth birthday. This also was unlike any day for the past one year but was like many days before. This makes me wonder, what was the last year about? It is as if time stopped and we all moved ahead a year and picked up where we had left off. However, that is not completely accurate, there has been much loss during the past year. Can the lost be found again? Can what once was be redeemed? The good old times, everyone wants the good old times. It seems that when people discuss heaven, they talk of heaven as though it is a family reunion and things returning to what they were before. Is heaven a returning to what was or a moving ahead to what shall be? I know that I am not what I ought to be now but my hope is in glory.

Dear Neighbor,

“For the Church” is the motto for Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. What do you believe about the church? Is the church a divinely ordained institution or a voluntary society of like minded individuals? If one views the church as a voluntary society of like minded individuals, then it is not absolutely necessary, other things may be more important than attending the church. However, if one views the church as a divinely ordained institution, then the church is the life blood of a christian while on the earth. I was just looking at a series of emails from our pastor, Phillip Dancy, the Pastor of Sylvania Church in Tyler, Texas, emails from one year ago. With great anguish and with much prayerful consideration, the elders decided to not hold Sunday schools or corporate worship service on March 15, 2020, do to the corona virus pandemic. For several weeks our pastor preached sermons via Facebook live and this was an undertaking because we had never videoed and broadcasted a sermon prior to this date. For several weeks we would not meet together corporately and even when we began to have corporate worship meetings, we were separated and many of us wore masks. It would be several months (the end of 2020) before Sunday school classes would resume. Many in the church did not see the need for the precautions and would not wear a mask in attendance and others had great concern, because of the individuals not wearing masks, they stayed away. This has been a very difficult time in the life of the church and a very difficult time in our lives as well because I do not view the church as a social club but as a divinely ordained institution, the church is the life blood of believers while we abide on the earth. It is through the church that people are taught doctrine, are baptized, and eat the Lord’s supper. When corporate worship services resumed, Darlene and I were in attendance, but when Sunday school classes resumed, we were not. I am a Registered Nurse and I work in the Intensive Care Unit. I had knowledge of what the corona virus was doing to people and many individuals who were not in the hospital did not see. It has been very difficult to be separated and especially during the difficult season of life that Darlene and I are going through with our children. Today, Lord willing, Darlene and I will be returning to a Sunday morning class at Sylvania Church and I for one am looking forward to it because the church is a divinely ordained institution and is therefore the life blood of the christian while abiding on the earth.

Dear Neighbor,

This morning I recited John 14 and read Isaiah 5-8. Mentioned in Isaiah 7:14 and again in 8:8 is the Hebrew term Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” This term is referred to in Matthew 1:23 as another name for Jesus. In either context, whether in Isaiah’s prophecy about the kings of Damascus and Samaria attacking Judah (Is 7:14) or the birth of the Christ child, (Mt 1:23) the name was and is intended to assure the reader of God’s presence. (ESV Global Study Bible Notes) Do you believe that God is present with you today? I do not ask, do you feel God’s presence. This term “I feel” is so commonly used by people today. People use the term subjectively, when they mean I think or if they have emotion about some subject. However, God’s presence with us is an objective truth. God was truly present in Jerusalem when he defeated the enemies of Judah and God was truly present with us in the person of Jesus Christ. In Jesus Christ sin and death are already and will be defeated. Today I am working in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit. I do not know whom will be in my charge to care for but I know that God was with us in Jesus Christ and God is with me as I go today in the Spirit of Christ. The word of God assures me that his Spirit is present with all who believe. (Jn 14:16-17)

Dear Neighbor,

Yesterday was a splendid day. I went for a 10k run, ate breakfast, sat outside with my dog and began reading a new book (Theology Drives Methodology: Conversion in the Theology of Charles Finney and John Nevin by Carl Dahlfred). I enjoy reading historical theology because it helps me to understand the reason that things are the way that they are. Yesterday evening, Darlene and I went to dinner at a restaurant that we have not been to for sometime, and on the way home, we drove by a church that we once attended. In its history, the church was once a fundamental-independent-baptist church, but the church has changed a great deal over the years to a seeker sensitive church. Why? Theology drives methodology. While the methodology has changed greatly, the churches theology has remained the same; when a churches theology is man centric, the methodology will always change with the times, but if a churches theology is Christocentric, the methodology does not change with the times because Christ never changes. Do you believe that a person can will their own salvation or that you can will the salvation of another person. This is what man centric theology does. If a person believes that man has the power to save himself, or if a man believes that he has the power to save other people, then what he says and does will be driven to that end. But what if a person believes that human beings are unable to come to God and that we are unable to cause the will of other men to change, the only answer is to trust the salvation of the Lord. Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.” (Jn 15:26-27 NASB) There is an outward call and an inward call in the salvation of every man and this method will never change. The outward call is the testimony of the apostles, found in the writings of the new testament, and the inward call is the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said to the Pharisee Nicodemus, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (Jn 3:3 NASB)

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (NASB)
The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.

Dear Neighbor,

The preacher in Ecclesiastes experienced and contemplated much during his life and he concluded that a person should fear God and keep his commandments. The word antinomian means without law. There is a spirit of lawlessness among many who claim the name of Christ today. People do not want to pay the penalty for sin (death and hell) but they do not want to keep the Lord’s commandments either. There is only one way to the Father and it is through repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance for the forgiveness of sins is the message of the gospel. (Lk 24:46-47) We have all sinned and fall short of God’s glorious standard; (Rom 3:23) therefore, we all deserve eternal punishment, (Mt 25:46) but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 6:23) In the book of Romans, the apostle Paul preached justification by grace through faith but what many people today miss or ignore the conclusion: “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” (Rom 10:9-10, [NASB]) Salvation from sin does not only mean the penalty but also the power that sin holds over your life. We are to turn from our own way to that of God, to revere him and keep his commandments; least on the day of judgment Christ says to you, “I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.” (Mt 7:23, [NASB]

Ecclesiastes 10:19 (NASB)
Men prepare a meal for enjoyment, and wine makes life merry, and money is the answer to everything.

Dear Neighbor,

According to the preacher in Ecclesiastes, money is the answer to everything, for with it a feast can be had for enjoyment. There is enjoyment in a feast but I feast alone is not enjoyable, so money is not the answer to everything. So what did the preacher mean by everything? Money can buy anything except happiness and can buy a ticket to anywhere but to heaven. What do I lament about the most? Would having the riches of Solomon be the answers to all of my problems? My wife and I recently enjoyed a trip to the island of Maui in the state of Hawaii. Money bought us the ticket for the airplane, the rental car, the hotel room and the food that we ate during the week of our stay. The trip was enjoyable but it is nothing compared to heaven. No amount of money on earth can buy us heaven. We have Christian joy because heaven has been given to us as a gift, by the grace of God, through the redemption which is in Jesus the Christ. Therefore, we have Christian joy because we know that our salvation is certain, that we have a place in the Father’s house with Jesus Christ and all who follow him. However, no amount of money can buy us what we desire while on the earth. The desire of our hearts is for the salvation of our children, there repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and no amount of money can purchase what we desire most.

Dear Neighbor,

Does anything at all really matter?
Ecclesiastes 1:3 (NASB)
What advantage does man have in all his work
Which he does under the sun?
I have labored for many years, at the bedside, and no matter how much I have labored, on the next shift, there is another person in the same condition as the one on the previous shift. I go to work, I come home, I rest and I do it all over again but to what avail? For many years I worked for my children but they have departed and gone there own way. I taught my children Christian ethics but they did not listen. I recovered persons from heart surgery only to see another in the same condition the next shift. I love running but I hate running on a treadmill; is not all of life a treadmill, running and not really going anywhere? I raised children and I took care of people in the hospital but will any of this work really matter in the end? What if I had no children? What if I never became a nurse? Would anything be different in a hundred years? In one hundred years all will be dead and no one living will remember us. Without a relationship with the eternal, life is fleeting and all is vain. Jesus said, John 14:6 (NASB) “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” In the end, the only relationship that truly matters is a right relationship with God because he is eternal; all that we have, all that we see and all that we do in this world is temporal!

Dear Neighbor,

Proverbs 25:20 (NASB) says,
Like one who takes off a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar on soda,
Is he who sings songs to a troubled heart.
My heart is very troubled and I am at a lost to know what to do. My hope, however, is not in this world but in the world yet to come. In this world my heart is troubled. I am told by others that the Christian should always be rejoicing. However, I find it difficult to rejoice because my heart is troubled. Have you ever had a child, a little baby girl, held her in your arms and loved her? Did you watch her grow before your eyes? Did you spend your days working and your evenings attending her activities? To rejoice in the Lord seems a selfish thing to me because my child is not following the Lord. “He (God) has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts 17:31, NASB) I confess that I have a difficult time rejoicing when I know that my baby girl is not following the Lord Jesus Christ. I am not rejoicing but I am lamenting. I am not happy but I am sad. I can be distracted for a time but my mind comes back to the present. In a Grief Observed, C. S. Lewis wrote: “Up till this I always had too little time. Now there is nothing but time. Almost pure time, empty successiveness.” My days off from work are filled with time, nothing but time, pure time, empty successiveness. However, I am not distracted at work but reminded. When will it all end? When will things get better? I desire the Lord’s coming, that all things be made right, but I worry about the Lord’s coming, least my baby girl be damned. Oh my heart is troubled! Oh my heart laments! Oh I am full of grief and anguish! Why does it seem like Satan, the world, and the flesh are winning? It is easy to say they are defeated when it is not your baby girl that they have stolen away. Come Lord Jesus and save my child, my baby girl, my troubled heart!

Dear Neighbor,

John 7:53-8:11, the story about Jesus and the woman taken in adultery is not found in the earliest manuscripts. There is, however, nothing in the story that is contrary to sound doctrine; therefore, I believe that it is a true story. Much can be found in this story regarding New Testament doctrine. I will often hear people in our society say, “Do not judge!” They are most often misquoting what Jesus said in Matthew 7:1 (NASB) about Judging Others, “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.” I think that the misunderstanding is twofold: First, they do not want to be told that their lifestyle is wrong. Second, they do not understand what is meant by, “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.” There is no doubt that in the law, given through Moses, that sexual immorality was a crime punishable by death. In John 7:53-8:11, Jesus never says that her accusers made a wrong judgement, adultery is wrong, but it is only the righteous who should execute judgment.  In Matthew 5:27-28 (NASB) Jesus taught his disciples, “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Adultery is wrong and is a crime punishable by death; however, only the righteous should execute judgment but as the apostle Paul wrote in Romans 3:10-12 (NASB)
“THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;
THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS,
THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;
ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS;
THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD,
THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.”
Therefore, judge righteously but it is not our please to execute judgment because we are not righteous, “No one is good except God alone.” (Mk 10:18, NASB)

Dear Neighbor,

Proverbs 18:10 (NASB) says, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe.” and Romans 10:13 (NASB) says, “For whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” What is the name of the Lord? Who is the Lord? The name of the Lord is Jesus Christ; he is the way and the truth and the life. He who has seen the Lord Jesus Christ has seen God. (Jn 14:6-7) No matter your troubles, no matter your worries, flee, run, to the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. It does not matter to whom or where you were born. “For whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” The Lord Jesus Christ is a strong tower. A strong tower sits above everything else in the area. From the strong tower the enemy can be defeated and the enemy cannot take down the strong tower. The wicked do not flee to the strong tower least his deeds be exposed. (Jn 3:20) If the wicked run to the tower, they must leave behind their wicked deeds because these he cannot take into the tower. Leave whatever is holding you back and run to the tower of God. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Strong tower and the righteous runs into him and is saved from the enemy.

Dear Neighbor,

Proverbs 13:13 says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”

What is your hope and desire? My hope is for all things to be made right. To live in a world where everyone loves their neighbor as self. However, this is not the world that I live in. I live in a world of strife and continues conflict. In fact, we are so accustom to it that we do not realize all of the conflict that we are in. There is conflict in almost every area of life. My hope is in Jesus Christ, the resurrection of the dead, the new heaven and earth, the life everlasting, amen.

The desire of my heart is to see my children come to the Lord, for them to follow Jesus Christ and be regenerated by the Holy Spirit. However, my children are not following the Lord, they are each going in the way of the world; therefore, my heart is sick and I confess that I am struggling to have joy. I have joy in the forgiveness of my sins and the promised resurrection of my body and the life everlasting in the new heaven and the new earth. However, my heart is sick with regards to my children, I worry about them and my relationship with them is strained. This is even causing strain in the relationship with my wife. She and I did not ask for the difficulties that we are having with our children. We raised them in the church, yet they have gone the way of the world. There is much of life that is like this; therefore, hope is deferred and my heart is sick.

Dear Neighbor,

When I started writing this blog some eight years ago, I did not know that I would end up writing a daily letter to my neighbor, yet that is what this blog has become. Should I be reserved in what I write to you or forthright? There are many things in my heart and on my mind that I do not tell others but talk about to the Lord. There is nothing hidden from the Lord, he knows my inward parts. If you pray to God, do not hold back because no one knows you better than God; he knows you better than you know yourself.

Proverbs 9:10 (NASB)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,

And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

I am reserved in what I write to you but forthright in what I write to the Lord. It is not because I fear you that I am reserved but it is because I fear the Lord that I am forthright. Do you know the Holy One of God? Even if you do not him, he knows you!

Many of his disciples withdrew and were not walking with him anymore. So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.” Jesus answered them, Did I myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?” Now he meant Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him. (Jn 6:66-71)

Dear Neighbor,

Life on the earth is a journey to the city above, to the city of the great king, the Lord Jesus Christ. Perhaps you have said, “We do not want this man to rule over us.” He is the Lord, all authority in heaven and on has been given to him. He will return on a day and our of his Father’s choosing, sit down on his glorious throne and judge the earth. All the nations will be gathered before him and he will separate them from one another. Will you be on the side that rejected his rule or the side that received him as Lord and Savior? This life with all of its pitfalls and temptations is preparation for the world that is to come. We are all on a journey but will your journey end in eternal punishment or eternal life in the kingdom of our God?

Yesterday, I spent a little time thinking about these things and the direction that I am going. What is my purpose on this journey? What is my job while on the earth? My purpose is to serve Jesus Christ and my job is to care for the people made in his image: physically, emotionally and spiritually. I must begin where they are and for most people I can only see to the physical in the intensive care unit. As I become older, I contemplate what the Lord would have me doing during my elder years. I want to complete this journey in service to King Jesus.

March 16, 2021

Dear Neighbor,

You were created in the image of God; (Gn 1:27) therefore, you are to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect (Mt 5:48) but are you perfect? God is love but have you hated anyone? God is faithful but have you been unfaithful? God is compassionate and gracious but have you been uncompassionate and ungracious? God is truth but have you lied? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you have sinned and fall short of his glory. (Rom 3:23) The wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 6:23)

How wonderful and marvelous it is to be given what we do not deserve. I work a job for a set hourly wage. Every two weeks, my employer pays me for the hours that I worked, the wages that I have earned. I think one of the most difficult passages in all of Scripture is one of the easiest to understand. Jesus said in Matthew 5:48, “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” It is difficult because I know that I am not what I ought to be. I have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. I have earned death for my sinning but unlike me, God is compassionate and gracious; therefore, he has given to me what I have not earned; eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is truly wonderful and is truly marvelous! I do not believe that I will ever get over what God has done for me in Jesus Christ.

March 15, 2021

 Dear Neighbor,

Yesterday I asked you to think about your job, what kind of work do you do? I am not intent on comparing your work to mine but mine is what the Lord has given me to do, it is my calling. In Colossians 1:10 the apostle Paul wrote to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please him in all that you do, bearing fruit in good works. What are good works?

The bringing up (not “dragging” up!) of children, lodging (spiritual) strangers, washing the saints’ feet (ministering to their temporal comforts), and relieving the afflicted (1Ti 5:10) are spoken of as “good works.” (Profiting from the Word, A. W. Pink)

Nursing is a good work and should be understood by the Christian nurse as a good work that we do. The Christian nurse should have a reputation for good works: showing hospitality to strangers, washing and bathing others, assisting those in distress and being devoted. (1 Ti 1:10) The Christian nurse should not preach oneself but Christ Jesus as Lord, and oneself the patient’s servant for the glory of God in Jesus Christ. (2 Cor 4:5)

Nursing, like all true works are good when the job that one does honors God, exalts Jesus Christ and seeks the best for one’s neighbor. So, whether nursing or any other job, why do you do it? Is it for covetousness that you work, seeking fame and fortune? Or is it to honor God, exalt Jesus Christ and seek the best for one’s neighbor that you work? Remember that we do not work for salvation but we work for the glory of God in Jesus Christ; for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. (Eph 2:10)

March 14, 2021

Dear Neighbor,

A short time ago Darlene and I returned from our trip to Maui, Hawaii. We had an enjoyable time there but travel is tiring; with the combination of the daylight savings time change and the time difference between Hawaii and Texas it will be difficult readjusting, so we may have what they call jet-lag for a day or two. We are both scheduled to return to our jobs tomorrow morning.

This leads me to ask, what do you consider to be your job? Human beings were created for work. We need rest because we are not God; therefore, an occasional vacation from our labors is a good thing and a blessing from the Lord. However, we were created to work and when we are not working, sin is at the doorway ready to pounce.

While on the island of Maui in the state of Hawaii (I do not know if the other islands are like this), Darlene and I noticed that there are vacation homeless all around the island, especially on the part of the island that has good waves for surfing; sleeping in make shift huts and broken down vehicles on the beach and these vacation homeless are not native Hawaiians.

Human beings were created to work, without which sin and death are at the door. The Lord God put man into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. (Gn 2:15) However, man decided for himself what was right and did not listen to God; (Gn 3:17) therefore, work became difficult. (Gn 3:18-19) A vacation is good, it is a blessing to have rest from ones labors but a permanent vacation is not a good thing because human beings were created to work. Without work a man wastes away and he does no good for the kingdom of God or for his neighbor. The apostle Paul wrote that the Christian should love the brethren, lead a quiet life and work, so that they will have good behavior toward outsiders and not be in any need. (1 Th 4:9-12)

 Psalms 119:9 (NASB)

Beth.

How can a young man keep his way pure?

By keeping it according to Your word.

Dear Neighbor,

Do you love the word of God? If you do not love the word of God, how can you possibly keep your path straight? The word of God is truth. I fell in love with the word of God in the year 2003. Darlene and I began attending a local baptist church. April 1, 2003, church decided to have small groups and read a book together (The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren). The book itself I would not give someone as a gospel tract but the Lord used it to draw me to his word. The book is broken up into 40 chapters. The plan was for the small groups to get together and discuss the book every Sunday evening for 6 weeks. We were to read one chapter a day on our own. I followed the prescription and read one chapter of the book each morning for 40 days. Upon completing the book I decided that I would read the Bible because I enjoyed the time that I had every morning reading that book. Something about the Scriptures in the book really spoke to me. It has been almost 18 years since I first picked up a Bible and read it. I have read the word of God everyday since. There has been much to distract but I decided long ago, that to read the word of God everyday, I needed to set aside time for that purpose. No matter what time I need to leave the home, I arise 2 hours prior that I might spend sometime with God in the word. I believe that I became a Christian in December of 2009 because it was then that I repented from my sins and began to follow Jesus Christ as Lord and trust in him as my Savior; after this I submitted to the Lord in baptism. My hearts desire is to become like my Lord and Savior in every way. He is the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father God but through him. (Jn 14:6) Jesus said to the pharisee Nicodemus, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (Jn 3:3) Jesus said, “Follow me!” Jesus Christ is the Word become flesh. (Jn 1:14) How can you follow Jesus when he has been taken up into heaven? By reading the word of God and observing all that the word commands.

Psalms 117 (NASB)
Praise the LORD, all nations;
Laud Him, all peoples!
For His lovingkindness is great toward us,
And the truth of the LORD is everlasting.
Praise the LORD!

Dear Neighbor,

Do you praise the Lord? The Lord is worthy to be praised by all of the nations on the earth. Many of the psalmist write of the Lord’s lovingkindness and truth. They are invoking God’s revelation of the Lord to Moses on Mount Sinai in the desert. (Ex. 34:6-7) Whatever the Lord says is truth because he is faithful and can be trusted by all. The Lord God is love; therefore, he is compassionate and gracious. The Lord should be praised by all of the nations for what he has done in creation and through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus. We all deserve death and eternal punishment in the lake of fire for sinning against our creator. He commanded Adam to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil but he listened to the voice of his wife rather than the word of God. Eve knew that she was not to eat from the fruit but she listened to the voice of a serpent rather than the Lord God who created all things. The deception of the serpent is always the same, he told her that by eating of it she would be like God, knowing good and evil. (Gn. 3:5) Sin is high treason against the creator of the universe and it binds us. Man has been in bondage to sin ever since. Deciding for oneself is not freedom but knowing the right thing to do and doing it is true freedom. Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” (Jn. 8:31-32) It is by following Jesus Christ and learning to observe all that he commanded that a person becomes truly free. March 11, 2021

Dear Neighbor,

As I read through the Psalms I am thinking about prayer. I think about my own prayer life and the prayer life of my home church. The Scriptures ought to influence our prayer life. Jesus taught is disciples to pray, (Matthew 6:9-13)
“Pray, then, in this way:
‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
‘Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
‘Give us this day our daily bread.
‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

The key to understanding the Lord’s prayer is not found in any of the lines but in the proceeding statement: “Pray, then, in this way.” The Lord’s prayer is not a formal prayer meant to be used in place of our personal prayers to God but it is teaching on how to pray and the things that we should be calling out to God about in our prayers.

Many of the Psalms are prayers. One example is a Psalm that I read this morning; Psalm 109, David calling for vengeance on his enemies and salvation for himself. In corporate worship, my home church uses the Psalms or the Puritan book of prayers; however, I do not like this because I believe that it distances us from God. Prayer should be a time of drawing close to God. At know time, except for reading and studying the Scriptures is a believer closer to God than in prayer. Therefore, our prayer life should be real and not a form that is repeated or reading someone else's prayer. Our prayer life should be influenced by the Scriptures in what we think and say to God but it should not be simply repeating a formalized prayer written by someone else. The Lord’s prayer has all of the elements that we should be praying about; therefore, pray about the elements in truth from the heart.

Yesterday, Darlene and I were privilege to see with our own eyes the great sea creature Leviathan of the deep.
It is difficult to appreciate the ominence size of these creatures, 45 feet and weighing 45 tons. Then later on during the day we saw a blow whole created by lava cooling where it meets the roaring sea.

How awesome and powerful is the Lord our God who created these things. To think that that the Lord our God; he who created heaven and earth and sea and all that they contain became a man in the person of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who died on a cross, in our place, for our sins is just amazing! Why would God do that, except that he loves us? Have a blessed day in the Lord Jesus Christ.

March 10, 2021

Dear Neighbor,

I am writing to you from the island of Maui in Hawaii. I have been reading from the Psalms. This morning I read Psalm 104. Psalm 104 is a Psalm of blessing and praise for the Lord, the God who created heaven and earth and sea and all that they contain. There is nothing like being on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to see this Psalm in microcosm. This island is made up of two mountains east and west mountain with a valley between. The mountains rise up out of the ocean and the sea flees away. The valley sinks down between the great mountains but the sea is kept at bay. The vast ocean waters around the island are teaming with sea creatures, which includes the great Leviathan. Leviathan in this Psalm is a poetic name for a whale. Darlene and have seen these great creatures from the shore and this morning we will board a craft to see them up close. The God who created heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them. The Lord Jesus Christ is his name. He deserves all honor, all glory and all praise from his creation.
Hebrews 1:3-4, And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.
The fourth commandment says, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” (Ex. 20:8) To remember or observe the Sabbath to is to remember that the Lord is the God who created the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that they contain. To observe this is to honor the Lord is the creator of all things and the one who sustains all things. Honor God and exalt Jesus Christ as Lord. John 1:3,
“All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.”

March 9, 2021

Dear Neighbor,

This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. I do not know who you are or where you are in the world but I do know that you are special because you were created in the image of God; therefore, a son or daughter of the living God. No, you are not “The Son of God!” There is but one, the Lord Jesus Christ who holds that title, for God made him first in all things. However, the Scriptures attest that we are all sons and daughters of the Father God, justified as a gift, by his grace, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, whom God displayed publicly as a merciful atoning sacrifice in his blood through faith. (Rom. 3:23-25)

Why did Jesus have to die? It is because of our sin that he had to die. “He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.” (Rom. 4:25) However, the main reason that Jesus had to die was to demonstrate the righteousness of God who passed over our sins (Rom. 3:25-26) He passed over our sins and applied them to Jesus Christ. “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (1 Cor. 5:21) This understanding is what led me to repent and believe in Jesus Christ and I hope that it leads you to Christ as well.

In Christ alone,

March 8, 2021

Dear Neighbor,

I have been reading through the Psalms. This morning I was going to stop with Psalm 85 but I was compelled to continue and read Psalm 86. The Psalms are broken up into 5 books. The majority of the Psalms in book 1 and many and several of the Psalms in book 2 were written by David the king of Israel. Psalm 86 is the only Psalm in book 3 written by David. What I found most interesting about this Psalm is in whom and in what confessional statement that David puts his trust in salvation. The confessional statement that I am talking about is Exodus 34:6-7.
Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
This morning I laid in bed for about an hour thinking. Darlene and I are on our 30th wedding anniversary vacation trip to the Island of Maui in Hawaii. I laid awake from 3:00am-4:00am but dozed at times, after which I got out of bed and spent time with the Lord God in his word. I was restless this morning because of the 4 hour difference in time change from our home in Tyler, Texas.
What I found interesting about Psalm 86, and David’s trust in the Lord through the confessional statement, is that it was this confessional statement that I was thinking about while lying awake in bed this morning. There is nothing greater in all of Scripture than the knowledge of the Lord.
In John’s prologue to his gospel, (John 1:16-18) he said of the Word, the Son of God, Jesus Christ:
For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
While driving from the airport, to our hotel room, Darlene caught this image of a rainbow over one of the volcanoes on the Pacific island of Maui. A rainbow occurs when sunlight passes through water particles, that is the scientific explanation, but in the Scriptures a rainbow represents the grace of God.

A Baptist Story in Cuba

Mission

The defining mission of the church is to make disciples of all the nations, initiate the new disciples into fellowship through the ordinance of baptism in the name of the Triune God, and teach them to observe all that the Word of God commands. There is an utterance of the church’s mission at the end of each gospel account and at the beginning of Acts. (cf. Mt. 28:16-28, Mk 16:15, Lk 24:46-48, Jn 20:21, and Acts 1:8) Jesus did not commission his disciples at the beginning of his earthly ministry but at the conclusion. However, he did send them out on practice evangelism trips as part of their training. In Matthew 10 the Lord sent the twelve out on a training exercise to the lost sheep of Israel. Jesus instructed his disciples to later commission them for the ministry of evangelism and discipleship to all nations. Evangelism is how disciples are made but evangelism is always preceded by discipleship because it is the mature disciple who learns how to make disciples and teach them.1

Evangelism is the intentional act of making disciples. Discipleship is the intentional act of teaching pupils. A disciple is a person who follows a teacher.2 There are many disciples in the world but the type of disciple that I am talking about is a pupil of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The words of Christ in Matthew 28:16-20 are known by the disciples of Jesus Christ as the Great Commission. There are four “All’s” given by our Lord in the Commissioning of his church.

All Authority

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” (Mt 28:18b)

As the Divine second person of the Trinity, the Son has always had authority as the firstborn of all creation; however, following his death, burial and resurrection the Son has new authority as the first to rise from the dead.

As a result of his death, burial and resurrection Jesus has the authority to give eternal life to all whom the Father gives him.

As the head of a new creation Jesus gives his marching orders to the church. (Mt 29:19-20)

All Nations

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” (Mt 28:19)

“All nations” does not mean that every human would become a disciple. It does mean that as the head of the new creation our Lord Jesus Christ intends for people from every nation, every tribe, every people, and every tongue on the earth to hear the gospel and become disciples of his Word. There will be persons from every nation, every tribe, every people and every tongue in the kingdom of God which is already inaugurated and yet to come in consummation.

The new disciples are to be baptized by the mature disciples. When a new believer is baptized they are identifying themselves with Trinitarian Theology. God is one divine being subsisting eternally in three distinct persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) all of whom are equally God in essence. By receiving believer’s baptism, they are acknowledging that God is their Father, that the Son of God, Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior, and that the Holy Spirit is the One who regenerates them to believe and observe all that the Word of God commands.

All Commandments

“Teaching them to observe all that I commanded you.” (Mt 2:20a)

Some believe that the great commission is evangelism. If they point out to an unbeliever that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Rom 3:23) that the wages of sin are death, (Rom 6:23a) that Christ died for our sins and was buried and was raised on the third day. (1 Cor 15:3-4) They think that if the person they preached the gospel to repents and believes they have fulfilled the great commission. However, the Great Commission is far more than evangelism.

The great commission includes both evangelism and discipleship. We are to make disciples through evangelism and then teach them to observe all that the Word of God commands. The disciple should become like the teacher and this is accomplished through a systematic teaching of and submission to all of the Word of God. Jesus taught his disciples for three years before he commissioned them.

Always

“and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Mt 28:20b)

This is the promise of our Lord before he ascended to the righthand of the Father and is a promise for the missionary today. As we are going in obedience to the Great Commission, Christ promises to be with us always and he will be with us all the way to the end of the age. This means that the great commission will continue until the end.

We become set in our ways and comfortable in our lives; therefore, it becomes increasingly difficult to depart from our comfort zones but when we break from our comfort zones and our usual way of doing things for the kingdom, we do not go alone because in all of our services and in all of our travels the Lord Jesus Christ promises to be with us always.

Landing in Cuba

“I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him.” (Acts 10:34-35)

Our airplane landed on Sunday evening, September 15, 2019 at approximately 7:00 PM. As the aircraft descended and I saw the buildings and foliage I knew that I was not in Texas anymore. As soon as the wheels touched the tarmac chills went down my spine and I thought to myself, “I am in Cuba! I am actually in Cuba!” Once exiting the aircraft, I walked down the stairs to the tarmac and walked a short distance across the tarmac towards immigration. Paul and I waited on the tarmac side of Cuban immigration for our religious visas. A Cuban government official eventually came and handed the visas to us. Once the visas where in our position it took about an hour to get through immigration.

I first meet Abdiel and his wife Janet after exiting the airport because they were not allowed inside. We then road by taxi (with Janet as our escort) to a bed and breakfast in Holguin where we enjoyed a meal and fellowship with Abdiel, Janet and Abdiel’s 81-year-old mother Myrna. I would not meet the other members of the ministry team until we arrived in Las Tunas the next day.

On Monday morning September 16, 2019 we departed by taxi to Las Tunas at 9:30 AM. The drive took about one and a half hours, not because the distance was great, but the going was slow because much of the traffic on the highway was either bicycles or horse drawn carts. We checked into Hotel Tunas at 11:00 AM. I dropped my bags in the room and came down to the hotel lobby. I spent about an hour talking with Abdiel in the hotel lobby. I started asking him questions because I was very interested in the history of the ministry. Baptist history in Cuba was the catalyst that the Lord used to draw me to Cuba. I had many conversations like this with Abdiel throughout the week; therefore, much of this text is a summary of those conversations.

Pre-Understanding

Before going to Cuba, I had little knowledge of the Baptist Church in Cuba except for what I had been told and read; nonetheless, I had a pre-understanding. By preunderstanding I mean all of the preconceived ideas and thoughts that I had about the Cuban Baptist before actually seeing and meeting them. What I did know came from a seminary textbook, “The Baptist Story:” Baptist began informal work in the 1860’s; and by the 1880’s both the Florida Baptist Convention and the SBC Home Mission Board had adopted Cuba as a mission field. The Spanish-American War between 1895 and 1898 interrupted this work, but by the turn of the twentieth century, Cuba became a key mission field for Southern Baptist. An eastern Baptist Convention and Western Baptist Convention were established on the island in 1903 and 1905, respectively. The Cuban Revolution of 1959 and the transition to Marxism in 1961 significantly disrupted Cuban Baptist life for a season. Several dozen pastors and two SBC missionaries were arrested and sentenced to hard labor in 1965; all were released after a few years. Over time, restrictions relaxed, and Baptist from other nations, including America, were allowed to work with Cuban Baptist in short-term mission initiatives.3

The Birth of the Reformed Baptist

Abdiel was called to ministry as a young man and admitted into the Eastern Baptist Convention’s seminary. According to Abdiel, the Eastern Baptist are Arminian in their understanding of Soteriology. Soteriology is the study of the salvation of man and is one of the ten major doctrines taught in Christian Systematic Theology. Our mission to Cuba (on this trip) was to teach the ten major doctrines of Christian theology to the Reformed Baptist pastors and church leaders.

Calvinists and Armenians both believe in the essential doctrines of the Christian faith:

  1. That God is one Devine being subsisting eternally in three persons (Father and Son and Holy Spirit) all of whom are equally God in essence.
  2. That Jesus is fully God and fully man in one person.
  3. That Jesus’ death on the cross was a sin sacrifice.
  4. That Jesus bodily rose from the dead on the first day of the week.
  5. That there will be a bodily resurrection of all the dead at the judgement on the last day; the blessed will go into eternal life, but the accursed will go away into eternal punishment.

Therefore, Calvinists and Armenians are both essentially Christian, but differ in their understanding of the sovereignty of God in the salvation of man. While this issue is considered secondary to the essentials, it is not unimportant because what we believe about the sovereignty of God can greatly affect our belief in the essential doctrines.

Below is a chart very briefly depicting the contrasting views of Calvinists and Armenians:

Calvinists

Arminians

Man is dead in our trespasses and sins; therefore, man is unable to respond to the gospel.

Man is sick in our trespasses and sins; therefore, man is able to respond to the gospel.

The election of human beings by God for salvation is unconditional.

The election of human beings by God for salvation is conditional.

The atonement (sacrificial death and resurrection) of Jesus Christ is limited to the elect.

The atonement (sacrificial death and resurrection) of Jesus Christ is universal for all.

The grace of God is irresistible.

The grace of God is resistible.

The elect will never fall away.

A person can lose his/her salvation.

Around 1997 Abdiel obtained a copy of Charles H. Spurgeon’s book “All of Grace.” The book spoke of a grace that was foreign to what he had learned in the Eastern Baptist seminary. He read that the salvation of man is the sovereign work of God (All of Grace). He read that man is saved as a gift, by the grace of God alone, through faith alone, in the Son of God Jesus Christ alone. He read that regeneration leads to salvific faith in Jesus Christ; therefore, it is not a work of man, it is the gift of God.His heart had been burning because he did not understand the Scriptures and knew that there was more in them than what he had been taught. This book became the catalyst for Abdiel and his wife to call out to God to understand the Scriptures.

An Answer to Prayer

At the beginning of the century (the year 2000) Abdiel was the pastor of a Baptist Church in Moa (eastern Cuba) but admits that he did not understand grace and could not understand the Scriptures even after graduating from the Eastern Baptist Seminary. The Eastern Baptist Convention had 134 established churches. By Cuban law, if a church and a convention was established before the Cuban Revolution (1959) then it could continue to operate; this seemingly hinders evangelism and church growth. Abdiel and his wife at the time (now deceased) had been praying to God for enlightenment about grace and understanding the Scriptures. Through a series of events that could only come about by the sovereign providence of God, Paul McClung came to Cuba in March of 2000 and taught from 1 Peter 1:20-25, Abdiel was in attendance. Abdiel heard the sovereign grace that Paul was teaching exegetically from the text and said that he was very interested in what Paul taught and wanted to know more. Paul saw the need in Cuba for theological education. While completing his seminary work at Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS), Paul attended a Bible Training for Pastors workshop (BTCP) and believed that the BTCP curriculum could be used to teach pastors in Cuba. Paul started going to Cuba to teach Christian theology to pastors on the island.5

Ecclesiology

Abdiel moved to Camaguey were Reformed Baptist house churches were being established through evangelism efforts.6 The church in Moa was taken over by his associate pastor. The Eastern Baptist did not support Abdiel’s reformed theology; therefore, they were looking for a reason to get rid of him. The church in Camaguey was given a property by an elderly woman in the church; however, an elder in the church had the property put in his own name instead of the church’s. During the legal dispute over property rights, the eastern Baptist convention took opportunity to throw Abdiel out of the convention. Abdiel continued the work of establishing house churches and appointing pastors. He organized seminary training for the pastors of these house churches without convention support and was able to do so for several years. Paul would enter Cuba through Canada as a tourist and teach the students as their seminary professor through an interpreter. Abdiel learned to speak, read and write English; therefore, he became Paul’s interpreter during the seminars and continued as the leader of the Reformed Baptist. In 2013, one of the pastors of the eastern Baptist convention reported what was happening to the Cuban authorities. Paul was expelled by the Cuban government and sent back to the U.S.A., he was not allowed to return to Cuba without a religious visa which could only be obtained from the Cuban authorities through a convention established before the Cuban Revolution of 1959.

Finding a Convention

“If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.” (Lk. 10:6)

If Abdiel was going to continue establishing churches and appointing pastors, he knew that these pastors had to be trained, but for Paul to come and teach, they had to be in a convention that was established before the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Also, the seminars had to occur on an established church site under the authority of a convention. Abdiel found a man of peace in the president of the Brethren convention who accepted the Reformed Baptist into the convention. Abdiel told the Brethren convention president that Reformed Baptist theology differed from that of the Mennonites; however, the man believed that they could exist side by side. The president of the Brethren allowed Abdiel to use the convention headquarters for the BTCP seminars and went to the Cuban government on behalf of the Reformed Baptist to obtain religious visas for Paul to come into the country and teach. After a few years the president of the Brethren convention emigrated to the U.S.A., his successor not in agreement with the former president’s decision expelled the Reformed Baptist from the Brethren convention.

Abdiel began this journey on his knees praying to God to enlighten him and saw God’s hands were at work throughout this entire journey; therefore, he stayed on his knees praying. Seemingly, out of nowhere, the president of the Apostolic church convention approached Abdiel about the Reformed Baptist coming into his convention. Like he did with the Brethren convention president, Abdiel told him that Reformed Baptist theology differed from that of Pentecostalism. The president of the Apostolic church convention said that we will be two in one convention; we will not interfere with you and you will not interfere with us. Abdiel believes that the Cuban government approached this man to accept the Reformed Baptist into the Apostolic church convention because the government views the Reformed Baptist as a peaceful group.

The Ministry Team

Abdiel leads the Reformed Baptist and interprets for the invited, foreign, English speaking, missionary professors. Janet (Abdiel’s wife) works hard assisting Abdiel and seeing to the needs of the foreign professors; she also reads aloud, in Spanish all of the text of Scripture during the seminar. Jose Luis administrates logistics for the seminars: transportation, food preparation and housing for the attendees. His wife Ailema functions as registrar for the Reformed Baptist Seminars. Junior and his wife Lieva are responsible for technology. I meet the ministry team during our first meal, on Monday afternoon September 16, 2019, at Hotel Tunas. We would enjoy fellowship together at this table throughout the week.

Seminario Biblico

The location for the Seminar was “Iglesia Evangelica Los Pinos Nuevos.” We arrived on Monday afternoon September 16, 2019 at about 2:30 PM. The church was filled with pastors and church leaders from 100 churches across Cuba. I was told that most of them traveled overnight, hitchhiking and covering distances of a few hundred miles. Others came in the back of large trucks open to the elements. The building had solid concrete walls, a concrete floor and a concrete roof. The entrance was a large opening with the doors left open for circulation. There were openings in the walls where glass should have been but there was none. I thought that it was hot outside (90’s Fahrenheit) until I entered the building. You do not know hot until you’re in a concrete building, open to the elements, that has been baking all day long, in the sun, on a tropical Caribbean island.

As we entered the auditorium Abdiel, Janet and Paul took their places at the table set up on the stage facing the attendees. The stage was a concrete floor like the rest of the flooring but risen up about one foot from the main floor. The back of the stage had a dugout area in the concrete flooring, 4x6x4 for baptisms. I took a place on the front pew next to Ailema, so that I could learn by observation how the seminar takes place. Immediately, I noticed that the boards of the unpadded pew were pinching my buttocks and the heat in the room was like that inside a kiln. The pews were made of 1x4 nailed boards separated in order to conserve wood for making as many pews as possible. None of the pews were padded; yet, these pastors and church leaders joyfully endured these conditions all day long, for an entire week, to receive this teaching. I would be given a padded chair the next morning, on the stage, which included an osculating fan cooling me from behind, but the attendees had none of those luxuries.

Paul began the seminar by teaching the doctrines of grace, after which a break was taken and the book, “Biblical Doctrine Survey” was given to each attendee by Leyanet after they registered with Ailema. “Bible Doctrine Survey” is book #5 of the 10 books in the BTCP curriculum. Book #5 contains teaching on Christian Systematic Theology. Books and paper are very hard to come by in Cuba; therefore, these books, next to their Bibles are very special to these pastors and church leaders. The ministry purchased a printing press, all of the paper and ink to print the books; which came from donations to the ministry that must be hand delivered into the country. It is impossible to bring the books into the country; therefore, if not for the donations, the printing press, and someone to bring the money into the country there would be no books. For the remainder of the afternoon Paul taught the introduction of the book which included the nature of theology and method and purpose of study. Paul would make a statement, comment on the statement, or ask a question and Abdiel would translate; when Paul wanted a Scripture read, Janet would read it aloud in Spanish. The afternoon session concluded at about 6:00 PM which would be the norm throughout the week.

On Tuesday morning the session would begin with theology proper,10 I was assigned to teach on these attributes of God: transcendence, self-sufficiency, infinity, immutability, omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscience. Just like when Paul taught, Abdiel interpreted, and Janet read the Scriptures. Every day of the week, I arose at 5:00 AM, read the prescribed text of my daily devotional Bible reading plan, recited a chapter from John’s gospel, prayed and went for a run. I would then have breakfast with the ministry team and go to the church to assist teaching systematic theology alongside Paul McClung with Abdiel interpreting and Janet reading scripture until 12:30 PM. We would then go back to the hotel with the ministry team for lunch, but the attendees stayed in the Kiln (I mean church) where they ate rice and beans for lunch which sometimes included a wiener. We would return to the kiln (church building) until about 6:00 PM. Then we would return to the hotel for dinner and separate to our rooms at about 8:00 PM. My room had an air-condition in it; therefore, I would relax for about an hour or two with a book before going to sleep.

Conclusion

“On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” (Lk. 10:6)

I am truly amazed by the resilience of the Reformed Baptist Church in Cuba and I am even more amazed by our God who orchestrated all of this in Cuba and in our hearts by his Devine will and providence. The Reformed Baptist Church in Cuba is a true church in every sense of the word. They have put aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, they long for the pure milk of the word, so that it may grow in respect to salvation from the power of sin; this is because they have tasted the kindness of our God in the Lord Jesus Christ.11
